North Tahoe and Truckee Before the Storm

Last weekend color spotter Jennifer Natale visited North Tahoe and Truckee on Oct. 10 before the storm blew through the region.

“I visited Page Meadows (also spelled Paige) in Tahoe City, and did about a 3 mile loop around the meadows,” she said.

“The aspen are at Peak and Past Peak in most areas of the meadows. It was very windy today with a lot of leaves blowing off and some rain and colder temps on the way. Not sure what it will be like after the next few days but today was beautiful.”

After visiting the meadows, she drove north on Hwy 89 to Sagehen Creek trail, outside of Truckee. She hiked along Sagehen Creek to Stampede Reservoir.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a prime destination for fall colors but it is a nice, mostly flat trail that winds along the creek, through aspen and pines and then in to meadows before the reservoir.”

“The first mile of the trail has the most aspens that ranged from Patchy to Peak. After that, the bushes along the creek had a variety of peak or past peak golds and reds, making a pretty patchwork of color offset by the pines. Past the reservoir, there was a stand of aspens, past peak, in the distance, which I didn’t walk out to (didn’t seem worth the effort from the looks of their more bare branches).”

This area was expecting snow and wind so most likely looks very different now.
