Color spotter Ruby Jay sent in a lovely report from Pacific Palisades where fall colors are dwindling as we are close to the end of the year. We love seeing the difference a little sunlight can make.

“When there are two sycamore trees standing right next to each other, the fall colors can seemingly last twice long,” Jay said.

The first photo was taken on Nov. 12 and the second on Dec. 20, she explained. “The sycamore on the right faces toward west and the left one toward east. As the one on the right received more sunlight, earlier, it showed fall colors first. Once its leaves were pretty much gone, the sycamore on the left started to brighten up. The way they take turns seems to make the fall colors lasting twice longer.”

Liquidambars leaves are still hanging on, though thinning, and the heavenly bamboo‘s leaves have started turning red.

“There is a hummingbird on the tip of a tree branch, while the cactus with its bloom seems to try to disguise itself in the shape of a giant bird,” she opined.
