Leaf peepers were out in force last weekend and they agreed that Bishop Creek Canyon has reached Go Now status – with some areas showing full color but also striped leaves.
There are still areas in the lower elevations of this canyon that area displaying green and should make the transition to gold in the coming weeks, but the bare trees up higher made some peepers nervous.
“In the lower elevations it was mostly green, yet someone had said, ‘Go Now’,” explained color spotter Julie Kirby. “I understand why. At the higher elevations the aspens were already losing leaves, while the mountain slopes were showing green, some yellows, and light oranges. Perhaps there had been winds stripping the leaves, making some trees already bare. So, I agreed, ‘Go Now’ before more trees were bare. For the next couple of weeks, I think the aspens in the lower elevations will be changing from green to gold.”
