Highway 50 had a mix of beautiful color early yesterday morning, Nov. 7, when photographer and color spotter Phil Reedy made his way along the route to see how the colors were coming along between Placerville and Kyburz, with a short side trip up Ice House Road.

“Placerville is looking great right now and will probably continue next week,” he said. “There are a lot of big leaf maples along the American River near the Ice House Road turnoff on Highway 50 and it looks like most of them have turned already.”

On east toward Kyburz, Reedy found some nice colors along the highway and river with more to come over the next week or two. “I went as far as the Eagle Rock River access just east of Kyburz and found some nice colors there as well,” he said. “This area still has some green remaining and should be good for another week at least.”

On the way back he drove north on Ice House Road to check out an aspen grove that he knew was about nine miles in.

“They are all at peak right now, so this is a definite ‘go now’ location,” he said. “In a couple of weeks the oaks on the mountainsides east of Ice House Road should turn red, orange and yellow and there are great views from the road as it climbs up from the river canyon.”

His final stop was a short spin through Apple Hill to check out the colors there and, of course, get some apple pie to take home.

“There are some beautiful colors in the area and more to come, so it’s great now and will continue for a couple of weeks,” he said.
