Autumn sunsets are glorious. They are particularly so in the Central Valley and Gold Country where the setting sun warps through the atmosphere, picking up color and vibrance.

John Poimiroo bolted from his dinner table this past week to record an evolving sunset that painted the sky pink, purple, orange and yellow.

Satisfied that he’d captured it, he settled back to finish his dinner when Joan yelled, “It’s gotten better!”

Up again on his feet he rushed to the porch rail and photographed Folsom Lake as the sky became red hot.

A blue oak is silhouetted by the setting sun; it’s one of California’s deciduous native oaks and common to the Sierra foothills.
