Chinese Pistache (pistacia chinensis) is an ornamental (exotic) tree that has proven to be California’s master of illusion.
As seen in this example, photographed today in El Dorado Hills, it is showing early fall color, dressed in yellow to gold leaves. Is it telling us that autumn has arrived at 800′ in elevation, a month before the autumnal equinox? No. It is reacting to shorter and cooler days, but a Chinese Pistache’s display is long-lived and gloriously vibrant.
Before it drops its leaves entirely in late October, this tree will illuminate with varied lime, orange, pink, gold, magenta, yellow and red leaves. That’s why it’s such a popular landscaping choice for autumn color.
The Sunset Western Garden Book says this is the only tree to turn scarlet in the desert. And, if that weren’t enough it holds bunches of tiny, bright red berries that turn blue/black before scattering around it. How’s that for an illusion?
