Fall Color Report, High Sierra

Page Meadows (also known as Paige Meadows), just southwest of Tahoe City, was a popular spot last weekend.

Color spotters Danny Gold and Phil Farrell visited, independently, on Oct. 4 and 5 and came away with colorful images to share.

Farrell hiked around Page Meadows on Saturday, October 4. He found the “aspen color was patchy – maybe 25% overall.”

Some groups of trees were fully gold or red, others fully dark green still. This seems to be a common theme throughout the state this year – some trees peaking with others just getting started.

He started his hike at the Silver Tip Drive trailhead (put “Paige Meadows” into Google Maps for directions, he recommended). The first half mile on the trail goes through the forest and small meadows that did not have color. It’s the the large meadows further west that are lined with aspens, Farrell said. “Many people were walking the easy, nearly flat trails to see the colors that day.”

Danny Gold spotted a few aspen groves showing some nice color on Oct. 5, and agreed with Farrell that the area overall was patchy.
