Color spotter Steve Arita drove up to Monitor Pass the morning of Oct. 4 and found the aspens Near Peak. He recommended other spotters Go Now to check this location out before it’s gone.
“Early morning was clear but had some clouds, which IMO always makes for better photography,” he reported. “Also stopped by Heenan Lake, the young aspens were almost at full peak. This would be a great spot early in the morning,” he added.
“The side road leading into the aspen forest at Monitor Pass is a bit rough, with some deep ruts so recommend folks be careful, I only drove to the meadow clearing area,” Arita said.
He also reported that on the drive through Hope Valley, up past Desolation Hotel and along the Carson River, the aspens were 60-70% lime green with some bunches of trees (across from Desolation Hotel) close to peak with lime green trees interspersed among them. “I think within 3-5 days or so, this area will show its colors as it always does this time of year.”
Debbi Waldear submitted a few photos from Hope Valley and added that, like many other areas of California this year, Hope Valley is turning quickly.
