Laurel Lakes Road is an adventurous ride (10/4/25) Michael Kwok

Color spotter Michael Kwok drove up Laurel Lakes Road last weekend. This is a steep and rocky road, which requires a high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive vehicle but yields some wonderful fall colors this time of the year.

Most people only view this color from a distance, but Michael was feeling adventurous and we are thankful he was.

He took some amazing photos and a beautiful video (see below), and found that the area is near or at peak and won’t last long.

    • Just south of Mammoth. I have only been once and can’t believe it has been more than 10 years! I would have bet I’d be back before I go again! there’s a valley to camp in with a small creek about half way up. I thought it was closer to 11000 ft at the main Lake. absolutely beautiful and there are trout! some tought clearance spots when I went and real tight at the end.

  1. Be advised, the final turn approaching the lake is a very tight switchback. Additionally, the switchback is about 500′ above the lake.

So, eye dialating, breath taking colors with a switchback to match

    You are your own guardrails.
