What would we do without color spotter Philip Reedy? Once again he literally went the extra mile to provide a color report covering a large chunk of our beautiful state.
“I left bright and early Saturday morning for a 300 mile color trip, heading first up I-80 to Truckee, then north on 89 to Sattley, and finally down Highway 49 and back home to Davis,” Reedy wrote. “This is the same drive I made last Saturday, but what a difference a week makes.”
According to Reedy, the colors were peaking from Emigrant Gap all the way to Truckee, so GO NOW! to this location.
Next he headed north back to Cold Creek where the colors have gone from about 25-50% last week to near peak now.
“It looks like it will still be nice for another week at most,” he said.
Lastly, a week ago the only color Reedy found along Highway 49 from Sattley to Downieville was at Yuba Pass. On Saturday the trees at the pass were past peak, but down near Bassett’s Station they were beautiful and at peak.
“Heading on down 49 toward Downieville the progress of fall color diminished significantly,” he said. “That’s not surprising since Bassett’s is at 5,300 ft and Downieville is only 2,800 ft. A few big leaf maples are showing some color as well as the Indian Rhubarb.
Reedy’s report has us itching for a road trip and is definitely worthy of this week’s “Drive of the Week.”
