Still, they illustrate what can be found along the byways in Mono County as peak color subsides.

While at first disappointing, this weekend’s trip to Mammoth Lakes, June Lake and Aspendell were very rewarding. Most of the color is stripped compared to average years this time of year, but there are glorious pockets of color still. Red Fir Road off Old Mammoth Road has a line of aspen that are just gorgeous. One is even still lemon lime. In June Lake, there is a pocket of golden aspen in full force between the main road through town and Gull Lake, and, as mentioned, Aspendell is stripped in parts but absolutely exploding in color on the south side of 168.
