New Fall Color Map

What They're Saying

Dave Henry and The Sacramento Bee have always done a great job reporting fall color. Now, they’ve introduced a new map that is the best depiction that we have yet seen of where the color is showing in the High Sierra (hopefully, across California). We’ve linked to the new map in Colorful Links, though here’s a snapshot of what it looks like.

  1. Had planned on going hiking this weekend near June Lake. Any idea on what trails will be open? Ideally I’d like to go on a 5-8 mile day hike to a few lakes in the area, but I don’t want to trespass or get a ticket. This is the only info. I can find that is of any use:

    – Public areas and trails in immediate proximity to roads (ex: Valley Loop Trail), will be open for residents only.
    – All other front-country trails, climbing routes, and backcountry trails will be closed to all users (visitors and residents).

  2. Thanks! A source from Visit Mammoth has informed me that the forests and wilderness areas are open, but no services are available.
