Rim of the World: Visit the Lakes, Trails

Grass Valley Lake (10/21/17) Alena Nicholas

Alena Nicholas spent Saturday exploring the lakes and trails that spur off from the Rim of the World Scenic Byway in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Lake Arrowhead (10/21/17) Alena Nicholas

Lake Gregory 10/21/17) Alena Nicholas

Black oak at Lake Arrowhead, Grass Valley Lake, Lake Gregory and nearby areas are at full peak speckling the forest with bold splashes of orange.

The San Bernardino range’s bigleaf maple, dogwood and aspen are now past peak, though observant spotters can find “color in pockets from Lake Arrowhead down to Crestline.”

Exotic maples, sycamore and liquidambar are also providing bright color in planted neighborhoods.

Big Bear Lake has peak color among its oaks, as well. Though, the aspen and dogwood are past peak. Here are some upcoming events at Big Bear:

  • Oct. 28 – Spartan Race
  • Nov. 3 & 4 – Big Bear Comedy Festival

Elsewhere in Southern California, Ryan Lumb reported that he had anticipated seeing Peak color on Mt. San Gorgonio (11,503′), but was disappointed to find it mostly Past Peak. And, Walnut color spotter Del Hossain had a frustrating trip to the Eastern Sierra, visiting locations that had already been reported here as being Past Peak.

Advice to readers: check this site the week before you travel to see reports from places you’ll be visiting.  If the latest report for the location is peak color, by the time you travel it may be past peak. Peak color lasts only from a week to a few minutes at any given location, depending upon conditions (wind, rain, snow, overcast).

Always look at the date the photograph was taken. As, what you are seeing happened often days before. What you might see now or in a few more days will be very different than what’s shown in any photo. So, get there as fast as you can whenever we report “GO NOW!”

If there’s no report from the location you plan to visit, check locations at similar elevations near where you plan to visit. As, it’s likely the color at that latitude and elevation will similar.

Finally, if you don’t like what you’re seeing at a given location (because it’s almost Past Peak), then don’t go there. Instead, consider traveling somewhere else that’s shown nearing peak or having just peaked, as it will provide the best viewing experience.

We are grateful to Ryan and Del for their reports, as they will surely help others avoid missing the best color.

This is likely the last week of great color above 3,000′ in Southern California, as reports are now descending to locations in the valleys and basins of the southland.

Now that days and nights are colder, the only thing sliding down the waterslide at Lake Gregory are fallen black oak leaves, Micayla Anderson reports.

Southern California’s mountain forests are now shedding their leaves as they evolve from Near Peak to Peak.

In the San Bernardino Mountains, Lake Gregory in Crestline is nearing peak with black oak and exotic maples showing orange, yellow and red.

Santa’s Village Unwraps Autumn Presents

Aspen, Sky Park at Santa’s Village (10/7/17) Alena Nicholas

Red maple, Skyforest (10/7/17) Alena Nicholas

Santa’s Village has been unwrapping a new identity. The venerable children’s attraction has become Sky Park, a place of adventures in nature.

Part of that transformation has been the addition of seasonal autumn color. Aspen and maple have been planted throughout the park’s fantasy village, and though the trees are young, they promise a show of fall color that will improve each autumn.

The Christmastide theme park in Skyforest near Lake Arrowhead (CA-18) still has its gingerbread houses, ice/roller rink, excursion train and gift shops, but now also a glacier-like climbing wall, roar-down-the mountain bike trail and thrill rides.

It’s a mix of updated 1955 nostalgia with 2017 soft adventure.

Alena Nicholas writes that she focused on the upper part of the San Bernardino Mountains, from Green Valley Lake to Big Bear, to Jenks Lake.

“All had wonderful color, with aspen, maple, and some cottonwood trees. They are at peak, to maybe a bit past, while the black oak are still developing.” Alena wrote.

“Still, great amounts of color still remain to turn across the upper mountain range. Big Bear had a lot of color around the lake, and in town,” but it was so busy with people up for the weekend that Alena was unable to maneuver around to take images.

At Jenks lake, “people were out enjoying their weekend boating and fishing along the shore,” providing for an enhanced experience with all the bigleaf maple (yellow), cottonwood (golden), aspen (yellow), black oak (orange) and exotics (orange and red) dressed in their finest.

Alena enjoyed a similar panorama at Green Valley Lake (between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear) and at a slightly higher elevation than Jenks.

At Lake Arrowhead, Robin and Chris Gago found dogwood Peaking along trails, with black oak Just Starting.

Mt. San Jacinto – A Palm Springs Peak

Mount San Jacinto State Park (10/7/17) Naresh Satyan

The bright gold of peaking willows, grasses and ferns becomes intensified at sunset at Mount San Jacinto State Park above Palm Springs, reports Southern California color spotter Naresh Satyan who scores a First Report.

Naresh reported the best color seems to be along the creek between Long Valley and Tamarack valley between 8500′ and 9000′, only a short walk from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway station.

He recommends taking the tram up to hike the mountains any time of year, though in autumn, the colors provide extra incentive.

Big Bear Goes Big

Big Bear, in the Inland Empire’s San Bernardino Mountains, is nearing peak with both native forests and landscaped yards full of color.

Color spotter Jim Lancaster traveled up from Orange County to enjoy autumn in the mountains, sharing pictures of black oak, carrying uncharacteristically golden leaves at Green Valley Lake and exotics dressing  home in the town of Big Bear.

David Calhoun commented that “the leaves are definitely over 50% peak in Big Bear. Probably closer to 75% now… lots of beautiful colors over the past few days.”

While the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa prepares for the holidays by putting up colorful lights and decorations, nature continues to light up the forest with black oak and Rocky Mountain maple providing orange and red ornaments.

Should you visit Lake Arrowhead, stop into the Gift Gallery to see Alena’s photographs. We extend the same invitation to other photographers and color spotters who contribute your work to this site.  Should you have them on display, tell us and we’ll pass the word to others so they can see what you’ve seen and photographed.

Alena agrees that the mountains are generally past peak, but for the observant the glow continues.

Fisherman’s Retreat, Redlands (9/10/16) Alena Nicholas

From Southern California, color spotter Alena Nicholas sends this first report on Yucaipa Lakes and Fisherman’s Retreat.

Alena has moved to an area within the Inland Empire that is central to the San Bernardino, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains, giving her the opportunity to explore areas we’ve not had fall color reports from, previously.

Alena writes, the mountains have a number of mesas along the foothills and near mountain bases, “with a crazy variety of trees that will turn this fall!”

This weekend, she visited Yucaipa Regional Park in Yucaipa where three small lakes are surrounded by exotic and native deciduous trees. Several types of water birds can be seen, as well.

At this point, while a little yellow is showing, the trees are mostly still green or lime. However, Alena sees a lot of promise, and recommends exploring the area’s oak woodland valley that is coursed by a stream that runs for 10+ miles.

Yucaipa Regional Park is not far from I-10 with nice campsites for RVs or tents, picnic day areas, shoreline for fishing and many hiking trails.

South of Yucaipa in Redlands on San Timoteo Canyon Rd. is Fisherman’s Retreat. As its name implies Fisherman’s Retreat is a great place for families and catching catfish. It also has similar stands of deciduous trees prime for a show this autumn.

First Report: Jenks Lake and Barton Flats Rec. Area

Jenks Lake ((9/3/16) Alena Nicholas

Jenks Lake ((9/3/16) Alena Nicholas

Alena Nicholas reports exploring new areas in the San Bernardino Mountains, today, the Barton Flats Recreation Area adjacent to Jenks Lake.

This area has a variety of trees “that should be beautiful during peak season,” including black oak, creek dogwood, chokecherry, Rocky Mtn maple, bigleaf maple, white alder, black cottonwood and Frémont cottonwood. Alena says “things are just starting to turn a bit” at 6,500′ in elevation.

The area has several small lakes and ponds, creeks and streams.

“Aspen Meadow” is closeby. Last October, California Fall Color reported that aspen would be the first trees to recover near Big Bear Lake following the Summer’s Lake fire, and that appears to be happening, according to Alena’s report.

A ranger at the Barton Flats Rec. Area said “the aspens are about six to seven feet tall and filling in very nice.” Alena promises to “take a trip there soon, as there’re some nice meadows and streams there.”

Look for several First Reports this autumn from this color spotter, both from the mountains and lowlands.

Also, these shots again show what you can capture with a cell phone, though Alena promises to start carrying the big gun, once the color fills in.
