Color spotter Mark Hanning-Lee visited Mt. Whitney Portal on Oct. 10 and found the area, and the wildlife, at Peak.

Hanning-Lee saw various species of trees, including willow and oak as well as some small plants showing their fall brilliance.

It was a pleasant evening view complete with mule deer crossing the Whitney Trail, he reported.

There was no direct sunlight to make the colors pop, just a storm light effect as the setting sun shone off clouds.
