All the Leaves Are Brown on These Winter Days

The first day of winter hit and a few days later Mother Nature really turned on the winter weather across the Golden State.

From wind to rain to heavy snow, holiday weather has run the gamut.

Photographer Philip Reedy was out and about on that first day of winter earlier this week, making the trip from Davis to Yuba Pass along Highway 49, mainly to take fly fishing photos in the rain.

“But the weather and absence of fall colors mad me think of that great song by the Mamas and Papas,” he explained.

“All the leaves are brown
And the sky is gray,
California Dreamin’
On such a winter’s day”

So Reedy decided to take some photos for the first day of winter that evoked the mood of the song.

“One nice thing about the North Fork of the Yuba is that there are beautiful colors from the rocks even in winter,” he said.
