Mark Hanning-Lee visited Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead last weekend to capture some of fall’s beauty with his iPhone 15 Pro Max. Please note that winter weather this weekend may have drastically changed this landscape.

“To me, these photos really show the value of the urban forest to fall colors,” he explained. “In this dry area, the Lake and Rathbun Creek contribute the water needed for species that produce great fall colors. The oaks in the surrounding mountains produce more of a tawny color. From about one to three pm, I photographed the Rathbun Creek valley above the Big Bear Zoo.

“Earlier in the day, I admired the urban forest and the lakeside trees near the Big Bear Village. If I had visited the willows in the south-facing canyons on the North Shore, then about 10 am to noon might get good sunlight.”

Specimen trees: Fremont cottonwood or poplar in the urban forest and in the boat launch area across the road from the Woodland trailhead. Shrubs and small trees: willows on Rathbun Creek
