Today is the first official day of fall for 2025, but as anyone knows who has been following this site, things have been well underway for over a week now.
Color changes have been happening throughout the state and just last week, Sagehen Summit in Mono County, generally one of the first places in California to really show off its color, went from “Just Starting” to “Near Peak” in what seemed like an instant.

So we can confidently say that things are ahead of schedule this year by about one week. When planning your next autumn adventure, we recommend keeping that in mind.
Lately, we’ve been hearing that Rock Creek Lake in Mono County as well as Heart Lake in the Mammoth Lakes area are starting their transitions. Recent, local rains may help move them along.
The Bishop Creek area in Inyo County is also starting to change.
Now is the time to plan a trip. As we all know, this season doesn’t last forever.
