Color spotter Jennifer Natale visited the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens on Nov. 25 and found it near, at, or past peak depending on the section.
“Since I’m based in the East Bay, I love that I can enjoy the fall colors at higher elevations earlier in the season (such as Tahoe, Apple Hill and Yosemite) and around Thanksgiving, look forward to what’s happening closer to home,” Natale commented.
Having a garden membership is a great way to enjoy many local gardens as they have a reciprocal benefit that allows you to also visit Sonoma and San Francisco Botanical Gardens for no fee with your membership card, she added.
As for UC Berkeley gardens, right now the Japanese Pool and Asia gardens are at peak or near peak with a few trees still to turn. The Chinese herb garden has some nice color but the Eastern US area is past peak.
“What I also love about the garden is their collection of dawn redwoods whose needles turn gold each fall. There’s also colorful shrubs with berries that provide some beautiful color,” she added.
Gardens are closed each Tuesday and this holiday week they will close at 2 pm on Wednesday, be closed Thanksgiving and then open all weekend, according to Natale.
