Fishing for Color

Eastern Sierra, Fall Color Report

Rock Creek Canyon (9/15/24) Lance Pifer

Before a cold weather spell swept into the area, Lance Pifer visited the Eastern Sierra over the weekend for some fly fishing and color spotting.

Similar to other reports we have been receiving, Pifer explained that the Rock Creek Lake area above 9,500 feet was looking prime, as was Bishop Pass.

With the days getting shorter and the autumn equinox right around the corner, we’ll see how the current cold snap affects the colors. Some areas in the region even received snow yesterday (9/16/24) and more is expected tomorrow before temperatures rise back up again for the weekend.

The weather should really kick colors into high gear by triggering the abscission cells or barrier preventing the leaves from being nourished. It is this shutdown of nutrients that causes the leaves to begin to change color and eventually fall from the branches.

Keep an eye on reports later in the week to see how things are progressing!
