Color spotter, Veronica M. sent in her first CaliforniaFallColor.com report, with lovely images from a rainy day in Santa Cruz last week.
“I took these photos of just east of downtown neighborhoods, including Market Street,” she said.
“The scattered red maples are at a flaming peak. Redbuds are peaking, too, in their gorgeous pink-orange gowns and bright leaves all over the ground. The edges of the Boston ivy are just starting to show a touch of red. Sugar maples and ginkgos are beginning to turn. But the cherry, aspen, and birch are barely showing any color yet at all. As elsewhere it seems, Santa Cruz is a bit early, but not for everything. The next couple of weeks should have a lot of scattered color here.”
She added that there have been few monarch butterflies in neighborhoods so far, but whales were abundant off the Seacliff area just a few days prior to her report.
“It’s a nice time to enjoy the quiet season in the Santa Cruz area,” she said.
