Color spotter Jennifer Natale drove from the East Bay to Calaveras Big Trees State Park last Saturday and said it’s a great time to visit!
“Once you hit the stretch between Murphys and Arnold on Highway 4, the fall colors are vibrant!” she exclaimed. “Lots of big leaf maples and dogwoods near peak but no pics from that since I was driving.”
“Calaveras Big Trees is at near peak and should look great throughout the week, probably even next weekend. I stopped at the visitor center, then drove the park rode down to the South Grove, where I hiked.”
The dogwoods near the visitor center were ranging from yellow to pink to red, while the drive down to the South Grove was also colorful, she said.
The South Grove itself ranged from near peak to peak and there was color all throughout the trail. Natale recommended that visitors watch the park’s social media and website for any trail closures or their fall-time prescribed burns (they cancelled one this week and there’s no new date but always good to check).

The park’s Facebook page has announced they have a prescribed burn in the South Grove scheduled as soon as 10/31. The North Grove should remain open during it but check with the park before heading out.
Thank you, Jennifer!
