Color has lived on through another warm, beautiful weekend but more winter weather lies ahead this weekend. While weak, wind, rain and snow are expected in the area on Saturday and Sunday.

Everything is GO NOW! Mid- and lower-elevation locations are peaking beautifully, including Convict Lake, June Lake Loop, Lee Vining Canyon, Twin Lakes Bridgeport, and Walker River Canyon. There has been some leaf loss in all areas over the last week, but every area still has a rich mix of yellows, oranges, and reds. It’s hard to say how much longer they will hold on pending the weather.

So check road conditions, pack a few layers, and charge your phone or camera! There’s still a little time to catch the magic in Mono County.

WALKER / COLEVILLE / TOPAZ
Monitor Pass (8,314′) – TBD
We did not get a chance to get to either Monitor or Sonora this week but based on past reporting we believe these locations to be in the same shape as everything else. Glowing goodness but probably not long before it’s lights out.

West Walker River, Walker, Coleville & Topaz (5,200′) – 75-100% Peak (GO NOW!)

Sonora Pass (9,623′) – TBD
We did not get a chance to get to either Monitor or Sonora this week but based on past reporting we believe these locations to be in the same shape as everything else. Glowing goodness but probably not long before it’s lights out.

Lobdell Lake Road (9,274′) — Past Peak (You Missed It)
We traveled up to Lobdell on 10/19/25 – Five days post storm – the road was a bit muddy and more than ever, 4wheel drive and a good clearance on your vehicle is crucial. There were areas of significant snow accumulation on the road. There is some color still out there but most of the area is past peak.
Note: Lobdell Lake Road is in bad shape this year and we do not advise driving past the recommended turnaround spot (see map). Up to that point, you’ll enjoy big, beautiful views and have a safe place to turn around. Beyond, expect severe washouts, water crossings, deep ruts, and rough terrain—not worth it, especially since the lake itself is a low reservoir. Burcham Flat Road (county-maintained) is generally well-graded but does show some wear and tear. Best access is from the south end via US 395 (just south of Sonora Pass), though a loop can be made with East Side Lane in Walker. Keep in mind that cell service is spotty to nonexistent, and a tow would be extremely expensive.

McGee Creek Canyon (8,600’) — 75-100% Peak (GO NOW!)
Last call here! McGee Creek Campground is an almost unreal golden. And it’s also the last weekend on the campground. Every site first come, first serve so come enjoy this incredible spot on the hill.
Note: the road is getting rough — large potholes and puddles will slow your drive on the paved and dirt sections to the trailhead.

ROCK CREEK CANYON
Rock Creek Road (9,600’) — Past Peak (You missed it.)
Lower Rock Creek Road – 75-100% Peak (GO NOW!)
The landscape is beautiful and colors at the lower elevations are popping.  There is a beautiful trail along the road and creek but be aware of runners and mountain bikers on the trail.
