Color spotter Mike Caffey spent October 3 along 395, mostly up in Bishop Creek Canyon.
“I’ve been going up here in the fall for nearly 20 years, and I can’t remember a better day than today,” he said. “We had interesting weather. Snow had fallen overnight and continued some throughout most of the day. The combination of snow and some level of clouds made for a spectacular day. All the area from Mammoth down to Bishop was stunning to drive. Up in Bishop Creek the Aspen are beautiful. Overall the trees seem very healthy this year. It was a a real treat.”
Caffey’s key observations:
– North Lake is spectacular but you only have a few days left. It’s definitely at full peak.
– Same thing with Lake Sabrina, it’s at peak and won’t last long.
– Sabrina approach is also beautiful, but is getting close to peak as well.
– I drove the road to South Lake. The lower parts of the road still have green aspen, the middle part is very near peak so people need to go now.
– South Lake itself is moving past peak at this point. There was some snow up there so I captured some leaves with snow on them.
– The trees just above Aspendell are perfect right now. They probably have a week left.
Bishop Creek Canyon – Peak to Past Peak (75-100%) GO NOW! You almost missed it.
