Last week’s wintry weather in the Eastern Sierra took a toll on Rock Creek Lake and Canyon. While pops of color remain along the road and some around the lake, many trees, especially on the road up to Little Lakes Valley Trail are past peak – stripped of their leaves or showing bunches that are turning black.
This canyon is still a beautiful sight to behold, and will be through the end of the week when more weather is predicted to roll in. It is an interesting mix of past peak, but also still some limey green. There were many people out fishing when we visited today and the resort is open until Oct. 13. If this spot is on your list for the 2025 season you must not wait. GO NOW!
Rock Creek Lake (9,700′) – Peak to Past Peak (75-100%) GO NOW! You almost missed it.

I hate for this article to post on the internet because it has been one of my most prized canyons on the eastern side. A secret that i only tell my closet friends. It truly is the most beautiful valley for hiking and fishing.
I have a few gems over there as well. hate to see it blasted online. praying i don’t see bunches of people showing up to snap selfies…luckily it does take some effort to get to these places
We had lunch at Tom’s Place Sunday and drove back to Rock Creek Lake. I’ve been sleeping out under the stars along Rock Creek for decades and decades, my first white ancestor explored the Sierra’s with his burros in the late 1870’s and his younger sister, my great grandmother came from her island in the Irish Sea, along with my grandmother and her seven siblings. So, I guess what I’m saying is the Eastern Sierras is a poorly kept secret. It was beautiful, we had real snow at Twin Lakes outside of Bridgeport and Mammoth Lakes, and lots of Fall Color from Genoa, NV on down.
