Past Peak But Still Splendid

Central Valley, Fall Color Report

Color spotter Philip Reedy wants fall to last as long as possible. It’s his favorite season.

“People often assume that past peak means it’s too late to enjoy fall colors, but you just have to look down rather than up,” he explained of his recent submission. “The ground near my home in Davis is just covered with Ginkgo, Pistache, Maple, Tallow, Oak, and Crepe Myrtle leaves, down but definitely not out.”

And the colors are especially vibrant during and after the rain the area had over the weekend. Although there are still Chinese Pistache trees yet to reach full color, most other types of trees are losing their coats of many colors rapidly, according to Reedy.

“This is a great time to wander around Sacramento Valley towns while the fallen leaves still retain their autumn colors,” he explained.
