On Friday, photographer Philip Reedy headed up Highway 49 with his friend, John. They went through Downieville and as far as Bassett’s Station.
Reedy reported that “the North Fork of the Yuba is best photographed in shade as it makes the colors more vibrant, so the forecast of partly cloudy skies looked promising. We were not disappointed.”
At Bassett’s they found the trees almost entirely at peak, and as Reedy hoped, the Sierra Buttes had received a dusting of snow.
“The colors of the Big Leaf Maple and Indian Rhubarb have increased over the past week to perhaps 25 to 50% turned, so the area should look nice for another week or two at the lower elevations between Sierra City and Downieville,” he said.
“We also drove the three miles from Downieville to Lavezzola Creek, one of my favorite spots any time of the year,” Reedy added. “Some of the rhubarb has changed, but a lot is still green.”
This area will probably be nice for another week or two as well.
