Borrowed Time at Rock Creek

The Rock Creek Lake area continues to hold onto beautiful color this year but don’t let that lull you into thinking you can wait on this location.

According to color spotter Gary Skipper II, it had the most vibrant color about 1/2 mile away from the campground access road, and a little past with intense oranges.

“I remember one tree with green, yellow and orange on it,” he said.

Color like this won’t stick around for long so GO NOW! to this location. One little windy day could change things dramatically.

  1. We’re heading up from LA to the Eastern Sierra this weekend to enjoy the fall colors. We have kids with us, so we’re looking for spots with short, accessible trails—ideally no more than 1-2 miles. Could you suggest a few places that are at their peak right now and don’t require a long walk? This is our first visit, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

    • Convict Lake is a beautiful and fairly easy hike around the lake. Colors are looking lovely right now. You can also drive the June Lake Loop, which is a patchy mix of color at the moment. Enjoy!

    • Drive up into the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Lots of easy places to wander with kids around Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake Mamie, Lake George and Horseshoe Lake. Stop at the Mammoth Lakes California Welcome Center on your way into town for a free map and more info.
