Color spotter and professional photographer, Philip Reedy, recently took a road trip with his wife to New Mexico with a detour down through the White Mountain Apache Reservation between Show Low and Springerville, Arizona. His takeaway – it seems that fall colors aren’t just for trees.
“There are a lot of aspens along Highway 260, and while most are still green, perhaps 5% at the higher elevations have turned a golden yellow,” Reedy said. “There are also a lot of wildflowers blooming both in the mountains and in the desert of western New Mexico, especially near the tiny hamlet of Pie Town. It is aptly named as the Pie-O-Neer cafe serves amazing pies in the middle of nowhere.”
Reedy even saw a few plants still blooming in White Sands National Park among the dunes.
