Color spotter Phillip Reedy visited Red Lake along Carson Pass, east of Kirkwood, and found the aspen peaking with a kaleidoscope of green, lime, yellow and orange to be seen.

There’s so much color yet to develop, that Philip forecasts, Hwy 88 should have a rolling peaks for the next couple of weeks (conditions permitting).

  1. Hi,
My friend and I want to hike in the Red Lake / Hope Valley area on October 4 or 5. I am not familiar with hiking trails in this area. Could you give me some ideas of where we can hike where there are aspen groves?
    Thank you!

    • As you drive into the Red Lake area off CA-88, there is a “Y”. To the right is Red Lake, continuing straight, you reach a trailhead. ModernHiker.com and Trails.com list hiking trails in the area. There are many along Carson Pass, Hwy 88 and in the Hope Valley. Oct. 4/5 should be beautiful in that area.
